Wintjiri Wiru is a stunning drone, light, and sound show, takes center stage in the heart of Australia. The name translates to ‘beautiful view out to the horizon’ in the local Pitjantjatjara language, offering a mesmerizing cultural storytelling experience that vividly portrays a chapter of the ancestral Mala story through choreographed drones, lasers, and projections that illuminate the night sky.
This extraordinary spectacle is the result of a collaboration between RAMUS, the traditional owners of Uluru, the Anangu people, and Voyages Indigenous Tourism. The project aims to share the ancient Mala story, passed down through countless generations, with the world. Utilizing an innovative blend of technology, including drones, lasers, projections, lights, and sound, Wintjiri Wiru transforms the central desert and the night skies of Uluru into a theatrical canvas. This breathtaking visual experience unfolds across the desert floor, soaring up to 200 meters into the sky, accompanied by indigenous narration and Inma (songs) set to a spacious musical soundtrack.
“The night sky at Uluru has never lacked dazzle. The Milky Way is a long white brushstroke across the sky, shooting stars streak through the darkness, and satellites loop overhead, but these celestial lights might just have met their match in one of the world’s largest and most impressive drone shows.” Andrew Bain, The Sydney Morning Herald
What makes Wintjiri Wiru truly groundbreaking is its status as the world’s first permanent installation to combine multiple cutting-edge technologies in challenging environmental conditions, all while prioritizing a minimal environmental footprint throughout the project’s development.
The creation of Wintjiri Wiru has been a collaborative endeavor marked by dedication and a shared commitment to preserving the integrity of the project. RAMUS, the Anangu, and Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia have worked hand in hand to bring this world-class experience to life, setting a remarkable precedent for innovative storytelling and cultural preservation through technology.
